Gothic : a 5-week course

A 5-week course led by Dr Emma McEvoy, University of Westminster.

Thursdays, 7-9pm.

“With its tyrants, persecuted protagonists, monsters, doubles and dysfunctional families, Gothic has been one of the most popular modes of the last two hundred and fifty years.

In this five-week course we will look at Gothic literary works, film, painting and music.  We will start where the Gothic novel started, with Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto of 1764, before moving on to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.  In our final week we will consider contemporary Gothic – including Goth subculture.”
