Bridport has been described as “one of the best towns in Dorset, and for a continuously sustained urban feeling, perhaps the best of all”.
Architectural historian Tim Connor reveals that this, to a great extent, is not only down to what happened in the mid-19th century, but also to what did not happen. He examines the key developments that saw the community achieve its present form and were fundamental to The Making of Bridport.
Connor has written several accounts featuring West Dorset, its churches and monuments. His book The Literary and Scientific Institute is an enthralling history of the restoration of one of Bridport’s most distinguished buildings, telling the colourful story from its early 19th-century origins as a Mechanics’ Institute.
