1835 - 1855: construction complete

In 1835 the Institute building was constructed and opened as a Mechanics Institute.

By 1855 it was reconstituted in accordance with the Literary and Scientific Institute Act passed in 1854 with the objective: ‘to encourage the intellectual and moral improvement of all classes and the cultivation of Literature, Science and Art’.
